Souvenir Pope's beer

The oldies went to Germany for Christmas to spend time with Ben and Sonja and brought me back beer. Good oldies. This is a special beer from a village in Bavaria called Marktl. Marktl is the hometown of Pope Emperor Palpatine the Nazi Benedict. Being Bavarian they've brewed a beer in his honour. Good 'ol mum and dad brought me back a bottle of this holy water and a souvenir stein. Typical Bavarian Beer. Not the best from that part of the world but better than some. I didn't burst into flames when I drank it so it can't have been blessed.
Papst Bier means Pope's beer by the way.
I still haven't been able to source a souvenir Pope-on-a-rope though.
Thanks Ma and Pop.

Rebecca Watson drops into Sydney one last time

Skepchick and awesome Skeptics Guide To The Universe member Rebecca Watson has made a final stop in Sydney after her whirlwind antipodean tour of Oz and Kiwi Land.
Rebecca's talk at the Manning Bar, the dry Manning Bar (they didn't open the bar dammit), was entitled How To Ruin Christmas (For Pretty Much Everyone Involved).
I don't think I'll be giving too much away by saying you don't ruin Christmas. You enjoy it more than the fundies and that will piss them off.

As always Rebecca's talks are funny and informative and sometimes a little disturbing. But who the hell has heard of the lovely European Alpine tradition of Krampus? Krampus follows St Nick around and punishes the bad children. Tongues are involved. It is, as we say in this country, pretty fucked up. I love it.

After the talk I walked home through Victoria Park and watched the ducks. I like ducks. Szechuan style.

As you can imagine I was pretty thirsty because the Manning Bar was closed (dammit). So I stopped in at a bottle-O on the way home and picked up a couple of brews including the Magners Pear Cider from Ireland below. Nice.

Baby furniture assembled... finally.

Luckily we have enough room in our bedroom for the baby's tall boy, cot and change table. SIDS And Kids recommend the bub sleeps close to her parents for the first 6 months or so. Which suits me. Gives me another 6 months to clear out the spare room / library / baby's room.

After the hot hard sweaty work of assembling the cot and change table it is time for daddy to have a beer. This is a Kozel from the Czech Republic.

The sun is up... it must be beer o'clock

Oh the horror. Up early on a Saturday morning to visit a brewery. We even had to be there by 11. The only thing that will usually get me out of bed before 11 on a Saturday morning is a full bladder or a hungry cat.

Still, I managed to drag myself to the James Squire Malt Shovel Brewery in Camperdown with some family and friends for a brewery tour, beer tasting and canapes.
Tasting? Interesting word for what was practically all you could drink for the $30 admission fee. Middies galore of James Squire's finest. First up was a couple of beers to get us warmed up for the tour. The tour only lasts 20 minutes or so because it isn't a very big brewery. They probably turn out 40000 litres or more a week but compared to the big breweries this is small fry. It was the first tour I've been on with glass in hand. Or was it? We possibly did that on the brewery tour in Schwäbisch Hall in Germany. Now that was a good tour that finished with beer and sausage.

After the tour Chuck Hahn, he of Hahn beer fame, explains the flavours of beers they produce and what beers go with what food. Back in the 80s Chuck started the Hahn Brewery. He produced a number of decent boutique beers. Back then I worked in a pub in the city, Lucy's Tavern*, and we stocked Hahn beer. In the 90s Lion Nathan, the huge brewer of Tooheys, bought out Hahn and sadly the brewing of Hahn beer was moved to one of the big breweries where what was produced just wasn't the same as before.

The first beer we try is a Sundowner with sushi. Not bad. Next was, I think, the Amber Ale with lamb cutlets. The lamb cutlets were superb and went with the beer like something that goes with something else. We couldn't stop at just one lamb cutlet... or beer for that matter.

Obviously by this point we were getting a quite a buzz on. But we were only half way through. Trays of chicken pies were produced next and they were matched with, again I think, the Golden Ale. Memory is starting to get hazy at this point. Usually I wouldn't go for chicken pies but these were pretty good. The final beer for the tasting was a Porter. Chocolatey and sweet. What better to go with a chocolate porter than chocolate chip cookies? Big ones. Try and just have one.

Sadly (or is it with some relief?) the tasting ends at 1pm and we are farewelled by Chuck and handed a souvenir Malt Shovel Brewery middy glass and a key ring bottle opener. Because it is Saturday and the footy is on, Sydney v Hawthorn, we catch cabs to the SCG and more of what passes for beer at the footy. Awful stuff after the tasting today. The Swans won though.

*OMG. There is a Facebook page called Bring Back Lucy's Tavern. Surprisingly they don't mention me. ;-)
Lucy's was an iconic Sydney night spot, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, where I worked for more than 10 years (the end of the 80s and most of the 90s). It closed down sometime after the turn of the millennium.

Bright Brewery

Just 7 minutes walk from our motel is the Bright Brewery. As you can imagine the first thing we did after dumping our bags at the motel was head to the Brewery. It looked like it was pumping when we drove past.
Bright is a small town at the foot of the Victorian alpine ski resorts. It has always been very touristy but now it has a brewery. The local school was having a charity auction to raise funds for the school at the brewery. That explained why there were so many people there.
Anyway the brewery makes a half dozen or so brews but the beer of the day for me was the dark Dubell. 9% alcohol. After a couple of those you get a nice buzz going.

Beechworth beer o'clock beer of the day

The little sis enjoys a brew so she has dragged us along to Bridge Road Brewers here in Beechworth to get some take away for beer o'clock. We get a selection of beers but the beer of the day is the Robust Porter.

Footy, rain, beer and chips

Ah the joys of the footy in the rain. Who cares about a torrential downpour if your team wins though. The Swans beat the Bombers by 8 points in the end after 19 changes of lead during the game and margins no greater than 7 points until right at the end. A good close hard fought game. After the footy it was time to dry off at the pub (The Bat And Ball Hotel) for a couple of beers and a bowl of chips. Thanks Davo.

Where would we be without plastic ponchos? Up until half time it had been a glorious sunny winter's day. After half time it pissed down.

The presentation of the Marngrook Trophy awarded to the winner of this annual indigenous honouring game between Essendon and Sydney.

Swannies indigenous and recently retired legend Micky O'Loughlin carries off the trophy he presented the winning Swans.

Din Tai Fung with the Germans

DinTaiFung really does, as I've mentioned before, have excellent dumplings. I've been looking for an excuse to go back and thankfully Ben and Sonja visiting from Deutschland gives me that excuse.
Two beers of the day this time, Taiwan Green Beer and Yanjing.
We try a selection of dumplings including the regular specials and vegie dumplings. All are very very good.

Happy Birthday Chris - Sanders Waterfront Restaurant

Cerveza del dia - Sol from Mexico.

Seared scallops with green pea aioli, crispy prosciutto, kipfler potato

Sydney rock oysters

Chargrilled grainfed beef tenderloins, saute button mushrooms, red wine onion jam with sauce financiere

Tarragon battered flathead fillets, hand cut desiree chips, caper & dill aioli

Not bad for a Sunday afternoon down on the Parramatta River waterfront.

Coffee infused creme brulee, vanilla ice cream and some fruit... date if memory serves.

I'd never even heard of Cabarita before today. It is on Sydney Harbour about half way between Sydney and Parramatta. Sanders Waterfront Restaurant is at d'Albora Marina, Cabarita Park, Cabarita. It wasn't too shabby and puts on a decent solid feed.
