Wardens Food & Wine

This is the first evening of gastronomic excess on our Victorian trip and I feel like I've over indulged after the repast at Wardens Food & Wine in Beechworth. Wardens serves modern Italian. Wardens has 1 Hat from the Good Food Guide but since the last issue came out they've had a change of ownership. We don't know if they still have the same chef or not. Tonight's meal was good without being outstanding and we had a good time. The owner/waitress was an excellent source of local knowledge and was a pleasure to deal with. We had an idea of what we were going to be doing tomorrow and thanks to her we know for sure that the wineries we'll be visiting will be the way to go. But that is tomorrow. For now this is what we had tonight...

Ichnusa Birra from Italy.

Antipasti - Calamari, chick pea puree.

Antipasti - Sardines in saor.

Primi - Beetroot carpaccio, horseradish polpette, spiced walnut praline and gorgonzola dressing. This was the stand out dish of the evening. We all loved this one.

Primi - King prawns on a wild rabbit rillette, green pea mousse, baby leeks and hazelnut dressing.

Primi - Twice cooked lamb's tongue, kipfler potatoes, lentils and mustard dressing.

Secondi - Agnolotti filled with spinach and pecorino, assorted sauted mushrooms, pine nuts, brown butter sauce

Secondi - Grain-fed porterhouse with swede puree, baked brussel sprouts, caramelised onion sauce and salsa verde butter.

Secondi - Fillet of kingfish, eggplant caponata, green beans, candied fennel, and a light curry sauce.

Contorni - Pumpkin, black pepper and goat's fetta.

Dolci - 'Torta Caprese', chocolate and almond torte, vincotto custard, pumpkin seed praline.

Dolci - Honey pannacotta, sweetened chestnut puree, orange blossom jelly, oatmeal biscuit.

Wardens Food & Wine is at 32 Ford Street Beechworth Victoria and has been awarded 1 Hat by The Age Good Food Guide.
